How to change text to speech speed
On the home screen, move the Speed control between 0.5× and 2×. Slower is easier for names and unfamiliar words. Faster gets through a note you already know. Best quality puts speed and pitch back to 1.0×.
Change the speed
- Open Home and enter the text you want to hear.
- Find the Speed slider under the editor. It runs from 0.5× to 2× in small steps.
- Leave Best quality on if you want the clearest speech. That setting uses 1.0× speed and 1.0× pitch.
- Turn Best quality off when you want a different speed, then move the slider.
- Tap Speak and adjust again if the pace is wrong. You can change it before the next playback.
The screen also shows a rough listen time for the current text, so a higher speed shortens that estimate.
How pitch is different
Speed changes how fast the words arrive. Pitch changes how high or low a System voice sounds, also from 0.5× to 2×. Natural Voices do not take a pitch change. Their pitch control shows “Natural” and stays fixed, which keeps those voices from sounding stretched.
If a natural voice feels too high or too low, pick a different speaker instead of hunting for a pitch knob. The English voice list and the Hindi voices are the choices inside the pack.
Which speed to use
- 0.5× to 0.8×. Names, addresses, and a language you are checking carefully.
- 1.0×. The app’s best-quality setting, and the right default for a first listen.
- 1.5× to 2×. A note you wrote yourself, or a passage you only need to review.
Very fast speech is harder when the text has no punctuation. Add periods if a 2× playback turns into a blur.
The rate in Android settings
Android has its own speech rate under text-to-speech output. The slider in this app is the control that applies when you tap Speak or Save here. Set it in the app rather than expecting the system rate screen to override a clip you are about to generate.
Set a pace and listen
Download Text to Speech and move the speed control on your own text.

Questions
What is the fastest the app will speak?
2×, which is twice the normal rate. The slowest is 0.5×, half the normal rate.
Does a faster speed apply to saved audio?
Yes. A clip is generated at the speed selected when you tap Save. Change the speed and save again if you want a second file at a different pace.
