How to use text to speech offline on Android

Download a Natural Voices pack while you have a connection. After it finishes, those voices speak on the phone with no internet. A System voice is different: it follows your Android engine, and some engines use online voices.

Which speech actually works offline

Offline text to speech means the voice model is already stored on the phone. In this app, that is the Natural Voices pack. Speech for those voices is generated on the device, so a dead connection does not stop playback or a save.

System voices are the other path. They use whatever engine you picked in Android’s text-to-speech settings. Some of those engines, including options from the phone maker or from Google, can use an online voice. If offline is the whole point, do not assume the System voice qualifies. Install Natural Voices and select one of those.

Put the voices on the phone

  1. Connect to the internet. Turn on Wi-Fi only downloads in Settings if you want the pack to wait for Wi-Fi.
  2. Open the Voices tab.
  3. Choose Studio HD or Lite. Both lists contain the same voices.
  4. Tap Download and leave the install until it finishes. The app checks the file before it installs the voices.
  5. Pick a voice, go back to Home, paste your text, and tap Speak.
  6. Turn on airplane mode and speak again if you want to confirm the voice no longer needs a network.

You can remove a pack later from Voices. System speech still works after a pack is deleted. You can download the pack again.

Studio HD or Lite

Studio HD is the recommended pack. The app describes it as the cleaner, full-precision sound. Lite is the smaller pack, about half the size, with the same 27 voices. Pick Lite when storage is tight. Pick Studio HD when you have the room and want the version the app marks as best for most phones.

Either pack needs free space. If the phone does not have enough, the download stops and tells you. Previews you play before a pack is installed are streamed, so they are not the offline path.

Common mistakes

  • Testing offline before the install finishes. A partial download is not a voice yet.
  • Leaving Wi-Fi only on, then trying to download on mobile data. The app will ask you to join Wi-Fi or turn that setting off.
  • Expecting ads or the pack catalog to load with no network. The voices you already installed can speak. Updating the catalog cannot.
  • Deleting the pack to free space and then expecting those voices to remain.

When offline is the right goal

Use this path for a commute, a flight, or a place with unreliable data, as long as the text is already on the phone. Copy it in before you lose the signal. The app will not fetch an article for you.

Questions

Can I speak offline the first time I open the app?

Only if the Android voice you select already works offline on that phone. Natural Voices need the pack downloaded first. After that install, they do not need a connection.

Does checking for voice packs use the internet?

Yes. The app can contact its server to see which packs exist, to download a pack, and to play a preview before a pack is installed. Your typed text is not part of those requests.
